Grammy award winning Dutch DJ and Producer continues to conquer the world and capture the music hearts of fans around the globe! The momentum for his music and production continues to build and grow. For the first time ever in 15 years, he releases his new album “Forget the World” and it has already sent shock waves with hit songs - The Spark, Ten Feet Tall, Do or Die and Dynamite. With more releases from the album during the summer, a busy touring schedule and producing work – Afrojack, real name Nick van de Wall, finds the time to sit down with our editor-in-chief Maria Jordan to discuss the new album and his secret admiration for a cartoon show we all love!
Dutch DJs are really taking over the EDM scene from Hardwell, Tiesto, Nicky Romero, Armin van Buuren, R3hab and Martin Garrix. Do you feel there’s a certain element of competition and is there more pressure when you produce music & DJ?
I wouldn’t say there is more pressure when producing music, but the fact that the talent coming from our area is being recognized makes me even more proud of where I come from. It’s nice to be in the business with talented artists who I have a connection with, something in common besides the music and now we are extremely successful doing something that we love. I’m proud to share that with them.
What is the fans reaction so far from your newly released album ‘Ten Feet Tall’?
There will be some really cool unique collaborations and I think a lot of people are very surprised because the songs are so different than anything they’ve heard from me yet. I’m excited to finally share with fans my journey and the tracks I’ve been working on and I have been perfecting it for a long time. I hope everyone continues to love it as much as I do.
It was quite a while ago since you collaborated with Beyonce but how was it working in the studio with such a strong-minded artist who knows exactly what she wants and what do you take out from the experience?
I was asked to produce the song ‘Run The World (Girls)’ with Diplo, which was a huge honour. Beyonce has a great vision for what she wants and always makes it happen, which is a great lesson and it’s something I’ll always take with me. I was so pumped when she all of a sudden released her new album, that’s next level shit. [he laughs]
If you could start over again, is there anything you would change about your entry into the music industry & legendary DJ status?
Not really. I’ve been so blessed with all of the opportunities I’ve been given and I’ve worked really hard to get to where I am. It can be rough entering the music industry. Sometimes what you think are setbacks end up really helping you in the long run. I’ve learned a lot, so I wouldn’t change anything.
Share a secret with us that no-one else knows about you. Like, what’s your weirdest habit? What do you do when no-one’s watching?
I read and draw a lot of comics and I like watching TV shows like The Simpsons. Not a lot of people know that my ultimate dream, like, the one thing that would just make my entire life complete, is if I was a character on The Simpsons. That would be the most awesome thing ever!
Maria: Well, now that you have shared it with us, let’s hope it happens!
Nick: Yes, that would be so cool!
Tinnitus (continuous ringing tone in your ears caused by loud music) affects many DJs and it’s important to make partygoers aware of the damage loud music can cause. What measures do you take to protect your hearing?
As a DJ it’s really hard to protect your hearing, especially when you’re around it every night. I’m pretty accustomed to it now. The most important part of a good show is that the crowd really gets into the beat, but it’s important to pay attention to your body and try to be as safe as possible. I always use protection for my ears when performing.
The music industry is changing significantly, artists are beginning to introduce new platforms to launch music; via social media, Jay Z Samsung album app, Beyonce’s I-tunes album release, DJs are setting up their own record labels and so on. How are you planning to change the EDM scene?
This year I’m really looking to change not only the EDM scene, but the party scene. I want to take the typical party and turn it into something new. I have some big ideas that I can’t wait to try out. My new residency at Hakkasan in Las Vegas is the perfect place to do it.
What is the best thing about being so successful & popular? Be honest.
To be honest, as a producer, the best feeling is knowing that people love my music as much as I do. To hear fans say that my music has helped them in some way or is almost like a part of them, that is the best feeling in the world.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve done during your Jacked tour?
Partying with the fans can get crazy but I love it. I don’t have one specific time that was more epic than the rest, every show is so different and crazy in its own way.
What do you love about Ibiza and where can we find you kicking back?
Ibiza is like my second home now, I’ve performed there so many times and whenever I go back I get a good familiar feeling. Since it’s the party capital of the world, I like experiencing all of the different clubs and nightlife. They’ve got some very cool beaches, so during the day I just like to relax there.

MTA Records are excited to announce their new release, a collaboration between returning hero Ben Pearce and hotly-tipped trio Black Orange Juice. The four masterminds have joined heads and the outcome is ‘Predictable’, a soulfully smooth but bumping single that equally showcases lyrical flair and production prowess.
Manchester artist Ben Pearce made his debut on the label in 2012 with his first full length EP ‘What I Might Do’. The record had a rich and fruitful journey; it made its way through the blogs and eventually dominated the airwaves, as well as the clubs, and reached No.7 in the official UK charts. With a nod from tastemaker Pete Tong and the ‘Essential New Tune’ blessing, ‘What I Might Do’ went on to achieve big things and gained championing support from the likes of Jamie Jones, Annie Mac and Heidi along the way.
Fresh-faced London trinity Black Orange Juice are one of the UK underground's most talked-about breaking names. Ringleading producer/DJ Ossie (Hyperdub and 2020 Vision regular, and all-round club don), alongside childhood friends and go-to hook-machines Paul Black and Tilz, earned their stripes with critically acclaimed EP '3 Started Alone' last year. The release via trend-setting New York label True Panther Sounds (King Krule, Hyetal) garnered widespread hype from the likes of Pitchfork and FACT through to radio dons like Benji B and Rob Da Bank.
‘Predictable’ is an amalgamation of styles, song writing, and senses that individually shine through with inexhaustible soul and swagger. The record starts with angelic strings, which are quickly met by BOJ's silver-tongued vocals that lead into the instantly addictive chorus. With a uniting house pulse from Ben and Ossie leading the way, Paul and Tilz' flow, weaves classic soul and UK funky influences throughout. ‘Predictable’ is the perfect blend genres. Its high-gloss beats and tropical energy compliment one another making this an instant classic.
‘Predictable’ is due out on 28th April and will be accompanied by an exclusive remix package. The two outfits involved continue to tour around the globe, Ben has just finished his debut sold out Australian tour and Black Orange Juice’s summer festival schedule is quickly filling up making them one of the most in demand bands to see this year.
