What are you plans for the next Ibiza season, have you got any plans for the next season ? Charlie: I'm guessing I’ll be back at Space, again and Amnesia, really I want to pitch for Ushuaia to be honest with ya - that's more my style of music and I've just got Pacha residency over here in London, last week, so may be yea branching out to other Pacha’s as well, well to be honest Space is set in stone because of the company I work with. They put nights on there all the time Tatyana: We've seen the night (Space opening night with Charlie) that was amazing Charlie: Crazy night, crazy -yea fingers crossed for getting others as well. Maria:Do you prefer the Ushuaia tower or Ushuaia the main stage? Charlie: Ohhh main stage, the tower is nice it's classy, it’s nice but it doesn't top the stage for live Maria- Yep, I agree (the main stage) is incredible Where would you recommend to go on a date on the Island, say a first date? Charlie: A date? Umm I've never gone to Ibiza and thought of dates...umm obviously I am into dating men, that came out wrong (everybody laughs out loud).Do you what? ....Sands is lovely place and I would definitely go there on a date Tatayana: Perfect, it's nice out there Maria: What do you love about Sands? We were actually there for Carl's beach party which was an bsolute mayhem because it had 200 people in such a small place...umm so when you DJ there how packed does it get? Charlie: It gets really busy, you would be surprised, yea as you would have seen it, it's mad because they are kept quite secretive until the last minute. M- they do have competition there because Bora Bora is about five minutes away? Charlie: Yea but Bora Bora went through a bit of a weird faze a couple of years ago because it got really quiet and now this year it was absolutely packed. Where on the Island do you best unwind and get your inspiration, before a gig? Charlie: I never chill out to be honest, I like being around people before I work, I'm a weird one. I know a lot of DJs like to shut themselves away but I don't. I like to go to the busies place. Tatyana: the busier the better Charlie: For example, I would go to Bora Bora and spend my time there, getting the vibe and get the feel for it really, I probably should chill out before but everyone has got different ways of doing it . Tatyana: it just gets you into the buzz of things doesn't it? Charlie: Yes, absolutely Maria: Where do you normally stay when you go to Ibiza then? Charlie: Umm if it’s for a short trip like a day then my manager has a place out there so I stay with her but if the friends come out which is normally carnage, we would normally stay at Jet Apartments which is in Bora Bora. Maria: Really?I can't believe that. Charlie: This year we went for two weeks and to be honest I don't think I can do two weeks there again but it is like going home. It's mad but other than that I would stay in a villa. Maria: I would have never thought Jet Apartments. Charlie: We've been going there since the first time we went to Ibiza and that's where we've always stayed and my friends just love it. When I'm working I want to be with my friends especially if I’m there for two weeks and it’s a nice way to balance work and your social life.
Tatyana: There are ear plugs that you can have custom made as well so you can have different filters and level of protection, I don't know if you know about it. Charlie: I have the filtered ones but I don't know what mine are. I think they come under three stages, you've got the rock band and those are the once I have. Tatyana: We are trying to bring more awareness Charlie- Ohh yes definitely, you have to. You see people, not just DJs wearing them, I've seen clubbers wearing them. I saw this one guy wearing big luminous ones and they've all got them custom made because you come out from some of them (referring to gigs) and you can't hear for a couple of days. What is it about Ibiza that brings your soul to life or is there anything that brings your soul to life when you're out there? Charlie: I just think it’s the music that brings people together. There isn’t anywhere in the world that I have been so far, as mad as it sounds, that does that to people. Tatyana: Yea, it just unites everybody. Charlie: Absolutely.... it does, you give something back to the Island and the island gives you something back and I don't think you can find that anywhere else. Tatyana: Yes, completely agree with you, I've been to a few places myself, even Vegas - it's such a divide and a bit pretentious whereas Ibiza is not pretentious at all. Charlie: No, not at all, at all. Charlie, we know just how much Ibiza benefits from your music talent, have you considered spreading your DJing wings to say Miami or Vegas to give them a taste of that talent? Charlie: I'd love to but it's about timing, as I do the breakfast show Monday to Friday. I have to be in London and then the weekends are really quite tough to do and come back so... I do a lot of travelling and I do play in other countries but that's in my time off so I'd go away for a week or two weeks then I'll get a gig there but the Miami music conference I'm definitely going to try and get out there next year. Have you got an Ibiza dress code, is there a certain thing that you would only take to Ibiza and nowhere else? Charlie: My friend would say I've got a hat, what are those hats, a bowler hat in fact. They call it the naughty hat....I'm not naughty but they say when it's on, it's gonna be a naughty night so I'll say the hat always comes out because it doesn't matter what your hair looks like underneath, apart from when I'm playing it comes off for about two hours but yes the hat, comfy clothes and heals.
What advice can you give to Ibiza virgins, to people that have never been there before and can you give a few tips to prepare them? Charlie: Umm, take some Lugazade or Red Bull and my favourite place to stay is the Bora Bora side. I think it’s great for day time parties, pool parties and you're right on the beach, close to all the clubs so if you're going for the first time and you don't really know where anything is, you don't have to worry about getting cabs anywhere it's quite central, so I would say take that and also some dry shampoo because you probably won't be washing that much. How is it to have DJed with the legendary Carl Cox, what was that experience like? Charlie: The thing is, I obviously never take anything for granted but it's just like playing with your friend, which sounds ridiculous because it’s Carl Cox and I never thought I'd be saying that, never. Tatayana: He is such a legend isn't he? Charlie: Yes, but nowadays although we have the same line up, we don't really play in the same rooms, we play totally different music so if I'm on his line up on the Tuesday at Space then I'll be in a separate room and play with Fat Boy Slim as we play the same kind of music. We still go on the same bill but obviously musically we don't work together. Was it quite nerve-racking the first time you played with him? Charlie: Yes, it must have been but I blanked it out, I'm scared for about thirty seconds. I have a ritual wee before I go (and play) and once I've done that I'm fine and block everything out. Everyone in the crowd just becomes one person, it's strange really. Tatyana: It's like one big family, isn't it? Charlie: Yes, you just forget everything and t's amazing You are the Queen of breakfast radio and we absolutely love you .....I listen to you every morning. Charlie: Awww, do you really? Tatyana: Yea I really do, it starts my day on a high. Tatyana: haha, how do you balance radio presenting with your DJ work because you said you start so early for the morning show and you probably feel tired by five in the afternoon and you're like right I need to go to bed but you carry on and you DJ in the night Charlie: Simply passion! I'd be honest with you. If it was anything else or if it wasn't that, I don't think I'd do it. Yesterday I did the breakfast show in the morning and I came straight home actually then I played in Bristol last night, got home at quarter past four this morning and left my house at half four straight back to the show so I wouldn't do that if I didn't love my job. Tatyana: Yea, the pill of passion. Charlie: Yea it is, there's nothing else I would rather do.
Tatyana: That's really amazing. Do you have any scheduled remixes, do you also produce music as well? Charlie: I have started to, I have three tracks, one contract has just come back and that will be released in February, another two have been signed, one is going to be in a new film which is now Clarks film and it comes out in May, the second one is a hush-tag as well but we need to vocal on it. I'm actually just talking to someone very interesting right now and... can we say...(Quick whisper to the management team). Maria: Come on... give us the exclusive. Charlie: Sod it....I'll say it, Fat Boy Slim has send me some samples from one of his old tracks, can’t give you the name but I'm doing a remix for him as well. Tatyana: Is there anybody you would like to collaborate with on the Island? Charlie:I'd love to play with Nervo, they came number 16 in the TOP 100 DJ Mag awards and it's amazing. Maria: I met them last year at the DJ awards and I've never seen more hyper girls, they are so friendly. Charlie: Yea, they are good girls, I would also like to work with Avicii and obviously everyone wants to work with Swedish House Mafia. Maria: Which one of them as they have now split up? Charlie: Probably Axwell.
Tatyana: Thanks so much Charlie.
Charlie: Thanks for having me.
