It feels amazing to be here, I was here years ago and it was so different now.
How do you think the island has changed because obviously it wasn’t so popular 40 years ago?
Max Martire: “I grew up in Ibiza, so I was DJing here in 1991/92 at Space and I have seen the development. Before it was more hippie but now it’s very commercial which is still good for the music industry and for the producers.”
Kathy Sledge: “Yes, we actually met in Ibiza. Max pretty much grew up here, he was in the same industry as me. Back in those days, I even had early hits with Roger Sanchez”.
It’s a dream place, isn’t it?
Kathy: “Oh my gosh, yes absolutely”.
Early in 2013, Lenny Ibizarre and Max Martire formed the "Aristofreeks" - an outlet for their remixing and producing. The two Ibiza legends joined force with Jerry L. Greenberg (Forma president of Atlantic Records) and formed Pacific Electronic Music record label.
How do you think music has changed over the years?
Kathy: “I will let Max answer this but what’s interesting about music from an artist’s point is that good dance music never really goes away. I always felt when we sang “We are family” at 16 years old (we did it in one take, which is kind of crazy) will be one of those legendary songs that’s hard to forget.”
Max: I started DJing when I was 13 years old so I used to play a lot of house music whereas now, it has switched to pop music. It’s another time and things change. Kathy: I think good music no matter how old or new it is, it lifts you.”
Max: I am a very old school guy and this is why we are now making a new track with Kathy.
(Kathy jumps in) Should we say it? Max: Yes, world exclusive especially for Inside Ibiza, Kathy and I are happy to announce that we have done a remix of the original single of “We are family”.
Kathy: The first song we worked on is called “Thank you”. I worked on it with Max and his business partner Lenny Ibizarre. The words in the song are very appropriate for me because it’s a way of saying thank you for all the support and fans.
Max: It’s kind of old school, disco house, and really happy tempo for the people who like this kind of music and also we did the remix of “We are family”.
Kathy: You know what I love about it (We are family)? We did it all over again and it sounds like the classic record with a new beat but we were very careful because it’s so classic. He took it to the edge of what it would be now if it was written and produced then. Nile Rodgers is also coming to do some remixes with us.
So, are you doing an album?
Kathy: Well, it started with just a few songs and now it’s really growing. She laughs....
Max: We have some old music with new remixes from Kathy like “Thinking of you” but these will come out later. We are starting with “We are family” and “Thank you” and we’ll see how it goes.
Are you planning to get back with your sisters for a duo?
Kathy: I definitely want to stay solo and I have been for quite some time. Max jokes “She is more than enough, she is too much and she doesn’t need anybody else. She has everything under control and she doesn’t need anything else.” (Laughter) Then continues “It’s an absolute pleasure to work with Kathy because when we are in the studio, it’s magical. That’s what it’s about.”
What are your plans for next year?
Kathy: We are definitely doing some electro festivals together with Max and Lenny and we are planning to do a lot of travelling.
What continues to inspire you to do what you love?
Last year, in the Oprah Whitney magazine, they voted me out of 50 women around the world as a “Woman who gets better with time”. I came number fourth and the compliment is ever so kind. I told this to Max, when you love what you do, it gives you inspiration because it’s not work.
Max, who does it feel to work with such a talented lady?
I feel honoured and my dream has come true because I have been in the industry for over 30 years and I love producing music. My best song was “We love thinking of you” (Kathy: “I love “We love thinking of you”). It is the number one song ever and it’s really a dream come true for me and I really try to put in all of my efforts and deliver great mixes.
Kathy: I do want to add this following what Max just said. Jerry Greenberg happened to be the president of Atlantic Records when I was 16 years old. He is the person responsible for signing acts famous artists and he is such a patron. He is who brought Max and Lenny and now they run the company which is based in Beverly Hills and now in Ibiza.
Max: We like working with Jerry because he understands music so well and now Lenny and myself have a studio here in Ibiza called “Magic Music Studio”. We invite people to remix and produce music and the songs that we produced with Kathy were finished in this studio.
Maria: I love your passion for music and the love you have for Ibiza.
Kathy: Yes absolutely, when we were doing some recording in Los Angeles, Max and Lenny kept saying you have to come to Ibiza so tonight we are here.
Thank you both, it has been an absolute pleasure and honour to speak to you today during the DJ Awards press conference.
Kathy’s pitch perfect performance during the 16th edition of the DJ Awards was simply mouth dropping. The high notes were higher than ever and the atmosphere was chillingly uplifted when the legendary words of the 1979 dance hit “We are Family” were sang by Kathy with the support of two thousand fans, artists, producers and DJs. We even spotted Luciano and Richie Hawtin doing a boogie to it too.
Bravo to Kathy and the Aristofreeks team!
